Simmons Tops Western New England College In First Win

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Junior midfielder Justine Beauchamp (Exeter, NH) had a goal and three assists to lead the Simmons women's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over Western New England in a non-conference match Tuesday (Sept. 6) at rainy Surprenant Field. This was the first win of the season for the Sharks who are now 1-1. The Golden Bears fall to 0-4.

Beauchamp gave the visitors an early 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when she received the ball from freshman Wellie Antonellis (Keene, N.H.) and blasted it to the far right post. WNE tied the contest on the first career goal by freshman forward Tayler Mazurski in the 28th minute.

Simmons went on to take a 2-1 lead at the break when freshman forward Antonellis netted a goal in the 36th minute off a Beauchamp pass.

The Golden Bears evened the game just 4:31 into the second half with a goal from Gangloff with Mazurski earning the assist.

Sophomore forward Desh Perera (Reading, MA) fired in the game-winner in the 55th minute when she got on the end of a Beauchamp corner kick and shoved it in the back of the net. Beauchamp found the head of sophomore Jennie Holloway (Hardwick, VT) to add an insurance goal 3:51 later to complete the scoring.

Western New England held an 18-9 shot advantage and 8-2 edge in corner kicks, but didn't take advantage of its opportunities.

Senior goalkeeper Ashley Wheeler (Nashua, NH) played 90 minutes and finished with four saves for Simmons.

The Sharks will travel to RPI for the RPI Classic on September 10th at 3:00 p.m. and September 11th at 12:00 p.m.
