Sharks Defeat Wildcats in 90th Minute

BOSTON, Mass. ? Simmons goalkeeper Ashley Wheeler (Nashua, N.H.) and the Simmons defense of Mandy Walke (Danvers, Mass.), Jen Prescott (Hyde Park, Vt.), Meredith Riker (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), and Katie McCarthy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) were an impenetrable wall as the Sharks defeated the Emmanuel College Saints 2-0 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match Friday evening at the Winsor School Field.

Johnson & Wales controlled the action for the first half and held a 10-4 advantage in shots for the stanza. The Wildcats couldn't convert, however as the teams headed into halftime in a scoreless tie. Sharks defenders Meredith Riker (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and Katie McCarthy (Falmouth, Maine) were solid for Simmons.

It was more of the same in the second half as the JWU continued to carry the play, out shooting the visiting Sharks by a 20-4 margin. The Wildcats had several solid chances on net late in the half, but again couldn't capitalize as the clock ticked down to the end of regulation.

In the 90th minute, Simmons was able to get on the board when Heuslein collected a rebounded shot and found the back of the net for the games only goal at the 89:16 mark. The visiting Sharks would then hold on for the 1-0 victory.

Wildcats keeper Kara Collins (North Arlington, N.J.) made five saves in the setback for JWU while senior Ashley Wheeler (Nashua, N.H.) recorded 12 stops for Simmons.

With the loss Johnson & Wales is now 11-5-2, 9-2-2 in the GNAC while Simmons improves to 8-7-2 and 7-4-2 in conference play. The Sharks host Wellesley College on Wednesday, October 26th for a 7:00 p.m. contest where the team will honor their seniors. The Wildcats will return to action on Monday, October 24th when they travel to intra-state rival Roger Williams for a non-conference contest at 4:00 p.m.
