Soccer Athletes Named to GNAC Weekly Honor Roll

In the consolation game of the 2009 Wellesley Soccer Invitational, Salem State used two first half goals to defeat Simmons, 2-1.  The win improves the Vikings to 3-1 while Simmons falls to 3-3-1.

Simmons soccer athletes Justine Beauchamp (Exeter, N.H.), Rachel Elliot (Amherst, N.H.) and Allie Megna (North Hampton, N.H.) have all earned a spot on this week?s Great Northeast Athletic Conference Honor Roll for their athletic achievements last week, the conference announced on Monday.

Fifth seeded Simmons Soccer upset fourth seed Emerson College, 3-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference Tournament First Round game at Emerson's Rotch Field on Sunday. The Sharks rode two goals from freshman Justine Beauchamp (Exeter, N.H.) to take the victory and advance to Wednesday?s semifinal game at Saint Joseph?s Maine.

Simmons freshman midfielder Justine Beauchamp (Exeter, N.H.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, the GNAC announced Friday Evening. The honor comes after a 2009 first year season in which Beauchamp started every game for Simmons, and ranked in the top 10 in the conference for shots. Beauchamp also earned Third Team All-Conference honors.

Beauchamp, a freshman, recorded her second goal of the season against St. Joseph's of Maine to lift the Sharks to a 1-0 lead. She currently ranks second on the team with 29 shots from her midfield position.

Elliott, a senior captain, recorded 13 saves against top seeded GNAC opponent St. Joseph's Maine, while coming up with 8 stops against Plymouth State. She also collected 13 saves against non-conference opponent Wellesley College.

Megna, a junior, scored two goals for the week. In the conference match against top seeded St. Joseph's of Maine, Megna put the Sharks up 2-1 in the second half. Against Salem State College, Megna found the back of net again to get the Sharks on the board.

"I am pleased to see our student-athletes being recognized by the GNAC for their contributions on the field," said Head Coach Erica Mastrogiacomo. "These young women are committed to excellence and deserve to be highlighted. Elliott and Megna are two strong returners for us and they have been integral in our success. First-year Beauchamp has put her stamp and is emerging as a young leader. It is exciting to think about the remainder of the season and how effective these players will be in our conference matches."
