Lacrosse Drops Tight Battle Against JWU

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons lacrosse (8-9, 6-5 GNAC) fell to Johnson & Wales (11-4, 9-1 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday afternoon.

From the opening draw it was highly contest battle between the two teams. JWU finally struck first seven minutes into the game then increased their lead to 2-0 two minutes later. The Sharks peppered the Wildcat goalkeeper Emma Glyman with shots throughout the entire first quarter before finding the back of the net.

With over four minutes remaining the in the period, junior attacker Frida Turriza cut the lead in half with her 49th goal of the season. But the Wildcats got the goal back scoring on a player advantage to conclude the first quarter with a 3-1 lead.

Midway through the second quarter the Wildcats increased the lead to four goals, but the Sharks would not be denied. The Sharks continued to fire shots at Glyman, but the JWU goalkeeper was able to come up with save until the late in the period. Coming of a clear attempt, senior attacker Cameron Richards charged the net to tally the Sharks second goal of the game. But JWU answered and pushed the lead back to four to end the half up 6-2.

When the two teams returned to the field at the start of the second half, JWU extended their lead to five, but senior Julia Chausse had other ideas. From behind the net, Chausse found junior Kat Wood in front of the net to cut the deficit to 7-3. After the Wildcats scored a minute later to make move the spread back to five, Turriza concluded the half with back-to-back goals to end period trailing by three, 8-5.

JWU kept the pressure on the Simmons offensively adding a free position goal at the start fo the fourth quarter. But the Sharks continued to fight. Four minutes later Turriza slid a pass to Richards to make it a 9-6 game, but JWU responded and got the goal back a minute later.

First-year goalkeeper Anya Younie played outstanding in goal tallying 13 saves over the course of 60 minutes to keep the Sharks in the contest.

  • Junior Frida Turriza tallied three goals and an assist for four points while winning two draw controls and scooping up two ground balls.
