Lacrosse's Five-Game Win-Streak Halted at the Hands of Saint Joseph's College of Maine

STANDISH, Maine – Riding a five-game win streak into a midweek Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) North Division contest, Simmons lacrosse's (7-8, 5-4 GNAC) fell to Saint Joseph's College of Maine (8-2, 4-0 GNAC) on the road, Tuesday evening.

The Monks struck first, taking advantage of a Sharks turnover five minutes into the contest to take a 1-0 lead. But four minutes later graduate senior Riley Wasiuk scored the equalizer on a free-position as the two teams concluded the first quarter all square at one.

Saint Joseph's added to their lead with two quick tallies – including a player-up opportunity – within the first five minutes of the second period. The game remained that way for the majority of the quarter until Simmons junior Maddie Desimio-Maloney found the back of the net to pull the Sharks to with goal, 3-2. But the Monks answered scoring a pair of goals to go into the intermission with a 5-2 lead.

When the teams return to field at the start of the second half, the Monks extend their lead to four goals, but Simmons junior attacker Frida Turriza answered. Turriza cut the deficit back to three, burying her 41st goal of the season into the back of the net. It was as close as the Sharks would get. Over the reminder of the period, the Monks took advantage of a pair of yellow cards by the Sharks and turnovers to go on a 5-0 run to widen the lead to 11-3 after three quarters.

At the start of the final quarter, Desimio-Maloney snapped the Monks' run, scoring her second goal of the game. But it the Sharks defense was unable to quell the Monks offense as they responded with a 4-0 run, before Simmons' junior Layla Drinkwater got the last word, registering her fifth goal of the season with three minutes left.
