Lacrosse Stumbles in Conference Opener against Rival Emmanuel

BOSTON – Simmons lacrosse (2-5, 0-1 GNAC) began Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action with a short trip across Brookline Avenue to face rival Emmanuel College (3-3, 1-0 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon.

Emmanuel struck first, scoring four seconds into the contest, but Simmons answered. Drawing a foul near the Saints net leading to a free position opportunity. Cameron Richards stepped up for the Sharks, leveling the match after one minute and 12 seconds of play.

The two sides traded goals back and forth for the remainder of the half, before Emmanuel took a 4-3 lead on free position. It would last the remaining seven minutes prior to the halftime horn.

Returning to the field at the start of the second half, Simmons leveled the match for a fourth time less than a minute into the second half. Kat Wood received a feed from Campbell Crane and beat the Saints goalkeeper to deadlock the contest at four. But the Saints went back up by one four minutes later.

However, junior Frida Turriza tied up the game for the fifth time. Receiving a pass from Crane, Turriza buried her 15th goal of the season. But it did not last for long. The Saints answered scoring four straight goals as they hung on for the 9-5 win.  

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior attacker Frida Turriza led the Sharks with two goals on the day, while tying her carer single-game high winning six draw controls.
  • Senior attacker Cameron Richards registered a goal and an assist for two points.
  • First-year goalie Anya Younie recorded three saves and scooped up three ground balls on the afternoon.
