Richards' Hat Trick Not Enough to Power Lacrosse Past Nichols on the Road

DUDLEY, Mass. – Closing out spring break week on the road, Simmons lacrosse (2-4) ran into a tough Nichols College (5-0) team, falling to the Bison, 12-5 on Saturday afternoon. Senior attacker Cameron Richards tied her career single-game high, tallying three goals for the Sharks.

The Bison were quick to grab a two-goal lead, taking advantage of a player up opportunity within the first five minutes. Late in the period momentum start to swing over to the Sharks. Graduate senior Riley Wasiuk and senior Julia Chausse ripped two shots off the post, before junior attacker Frida Turriza cut the lead in the half burying a free position shot into the back of the net.  

Nichols responded, scoring twice before the end of the first quarter to push their lead to 4-1. The Bison recorded the lone goal in second quarter midway through the period to give them a four-goal, 5-1, lead going into the break.

After a pair of player up goals by the Bison to start the second half extend the lead to 7-1, Sharks senior attacker Cameron Richards broke up the string. Just under five minutes into the third quarter Richards found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 7-2. Three minutes later, she narrowed the Nichols lead to four goals.  

The Bison answered. After pushing the lead back to five, 8-3, at the end of three quarters, Nichols offense remained aggressive scoring a pair of goals early in the fourth period. However, the Sharks were not going back down. Midway through the final stanza, sophomore Campbell Crane connected with Richards for her third goal of the game and fourth Simmons goal.

Simmons continued to chip away at the deficit. Junior Maddie Desimio-Maloney recorded her fourth goal of the season with under six minutes left in the game. But it was not enough to keep up with a Nichols offense that scored twice in the final five minutes to move on to their fifth win of the season.

  • Junior Frida Turriza registered her team-leading 13th goal of the season midway through the first quarter to the cut the Bison lead in half.
