Turriza's Four Goals Helps Lacrosse Overcome An Early Three-Goal Deficit to Defeat Hartford, 10-7

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons lacrosse (2-1) overcame an early three-goal deficit to earn their second goal of the season following a 10-7 victory over the University of Hartford (0-1) on Tuesday night.

The Hawks came ready to play early, scoring three quick goals in the first six minutes of the contest and kept the Sharks off the scoreboard until the last 90 seconds of the quarter. Senior attacker Cameron Richards broke up the shutout sprinting up the field and burying the ball into the back of the net.

Hartford maintained its edge, extending their lead with a pair of goals in the second quarter to take a 5-1 lead into the break.   

When the teams returned to the field at the start of the second half, momentum began swing back over to the Shark bench. Simmons took advantage of a multiple player-advantage opportunities, outscoring the Sharks 4-1 to pull within a goal, 6-5, heading into the final stanza. 

Trailing by one, senior attacker Julia Chausse scored the equalizer 46 seconds into the fourth quarter. With the game all square at six, junior Frida Turriza registered back-to-back player-up goals to give the Sharks an 8-6 lead, before graduate senior Riley Wasiuk made a three-goal game.

Hartford broke up the string of six straight Simmons goals with a goal in the four-minute mark to close the gap to 9-7. But was not enough. Turriza capped off the night with the 10th Shark goal in the final three seconds to seal the three-goal victory.

First-year goalkeeper Anya Younie earned her second win of the season, registering 11 saves in 60 minutes.

  • Senior Cameron Richards recorded the game's first goal with a minute left in the first quarter then connected with graduate senior Riley Wasiuk midway through the third quarter.
