NEWPORT, R.I. – In their season opener on the road, Simmons lacrosse dropped a tough, tight non-conference decision to Salve Regina University, 6-4, Wednesday evening.

The Seahawks took an early two-goal lead after the first 15 minutes of action, but then the Sharks offense came alive minutes into the second quarter. Capitalizing on a Seahawk turnover, junior Frida Turriza scooped the ground ball before burying the first goal of the season in the back of the net to cut the deficit in half.

It appeared as if momentum was shifting over to the Sharks. Five minutes later, senior Julia Chausse connected with fellow senior Cameron Richards to tie the game at two goals each. However, the Seahawks wasted little time re-gaining the lead, scoring off the following draw control to take a 3-2 lead.

After the Seahawks extended their lead to two goals, 4-2, Richards pulled the Sharks to within one. With just a minute left to play in the first half, Richards fired her second goal of the game past Grace Haesche to trail by just one goal, 4-3.

The Sharks came out strong at the start of the second half, forcing a trio of turnovers, but they were unable to capitalize on the early Seahawk mistake. Five minutes into the quarter, Salve Regina added an insurance goal to make a two-goal game again heading into the final stanza.

Midway through the fourth quarter, first-year Campbell Crane converted on a free position to pull the Sharks to within a goal. But it was not enough as the Seahawks added their sixth goal with seconds left.
