Lacrosse Climbs to Third In GNAC Standings with Victory over Elms

CHICOPEE, Mass. - Simmons lacrosse (8-2, 5-1 GNAC) improved with a 15-2 win against Elms College (4-3, 3-3 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Saturday afternoon.

Within the first two minutes of the game, sophomore midfielder Marita Nothacker found the back of the net to put the Sharks in front, 1-0. After the Blazers evened the score less than a minute later, graduate senior Abby Stoller recorded back-to-back goals to ignite a 5-0 run to cap off the first quarter, 6-1.

Senior midfielder Lilly Devitt took advantage of a player-up opportunity, scoring a goal to begin the second period. Stoller was successful on a pair of free-position shots to give the Sharks an eight-goal lead, before junior Lauren Whitman connected with freshman attacker Kat Wood to head into the locker room with the 10-1 advantage. 

Coming out at the start of the third quarter, Whitman and Stoller gave the Sharks an 11-goal differential. Elms snapped an 11-0 Simmons scoring run, finding the back of the net with five minutes remaining in the period. Sophomore attacker Cameron Richards netted a free-position goal in the last minute of the quarter to put the Sharks back up by 11 heading into the final quarter.

In the final period of the game, Whitman buried her third goal of the game in the opening two minutes as the Sharks defense held Elms off the scoreboard. Senior Nicole Elliott earned her eighth victory, recording three saves in 39 minutes, while classmate Erin McIntyre played the last 21 minutes tallying a pair of saves.

Simmons Highlights

  • Five of Simmons goals came from successful free position shots, including the following players; Stoller (3), Richards (1), Whitman (1).
  • Graduate senior Abby Stoller led the Sharks with five goals for five points.
  • Junior Lauren Whitman recorded a hat-trick for the second in three games, tallying three goals and an assist for four points. 

Game Notes

  • Simmons dominated in shot advantage 35-11, as well as winning 12 out of 19 draws controls.
  • The Sharks was 5-for-10 on free-position shots.
