Wood Nets Game-Winner against Rival Emmanuel in Double Overtime; Opens GNAC Play at 1-0

BOSTON – First-year attacker Kat Wood netted the game-winning goal with 15 seconds remaining in the second overtime time period to lift Simmons lacrosse to a 10-9 victory over Emmanuel College, Tuesday evening. The Sharks open Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at 1-0, improving to 4-1.

It was a back-and-forth battle all night between the two Fenway rivals The Saints jumped on the scoreboard first, but sophomore Julia Chausse scored the equalizer in midway through the first quarter. Moments later, graduate senior Abby Stoller put the Sharks ahead with her 23rd goal of the season to take a 2-1 lead after the first 15 minutes of play.

Coming out in the second period, Stoller gave Simmons a two-goal cushion, but Emmanuel quickly erased the deficit. However, with just over a minute to play in the half, junior Sammi Hogan connected with Stoller to re-gain the lead, but it was short lived. The Saints scored with under a minute to play and send the game into the half, tied at 1-1.

After a quick goal to open the third period, the Sharks scored three straight times to jump in front of the Saints, 7-5. But Emmanuel was not going away quietly, a pair of goals later sent the two teams in the final quarter with the game all-square at seven.

Stoller tied her career single-game high, registering her sixth goal of the game on a free position shot to begin the fourth quarter to take an 8-7 lead. Emmanuel came back and jumped on top, 9-8, scoring back-to-back goals five minutes later. But Stoller buried her goal number seven of the game with just under six minutes remaining in regulation to knot up the contest at nine.

The first overtime period was a quiet one and it appeared as the second overtime period was going to more of the same. But with less than 30 play to play in the second overtime period, junior Riley Wasiuk intercepted a failed Emmanuel clear and dumped the ball to the junior attack Lauren Whitman on the right wing. Whitman found Wood streaking to goal on the weak side for a catch-and-shoot goal for the game-winner.
