Devitt Registers Hat-Trick, Lacrosse Falls Back to .500 with 9-7 Loss to Salve Regina

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons lacrosse dropped to 1-1 on the season, falling to non-conference Salve Regina University, 9-7, on the Friday before spring break. Junior Lilly Devitt registered a career single-game high, scoring three goals for her first collegiate career hat-trick.

The Sharks found themselves down three early with the Seahawks taking advantage of a player-up goal nearly six minutes into the contest. However, just before the end of the first period, Devitt put Simmons on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal with 1:50 left.

It appeared as momentum was swinging in the direction of the Sharks. Graduate senior Abby Stoller opened the second quarter with her seventh goal of the season, cutting the Seahawks lead to one. But Salve Regina scored on a person-advantage halfway through the period, with Kayli Garcia finding Kathyrn Mullin to take a 4-2 lead into halftime.

The third quarter was offensively charged, with six goals scored between the two teams. After the Seahawks scored to increase their lead to three, 5-2, Devitt registered back-to-back goals within a minute of each other to cut the deficit to one, 5-4.

Following a pair of goals by Salve Regina, it looked as though the Seahawks would take a three-goal lead into the final period, but Stoller had other ideas. With eight seconds remaining in the third, she buried the ball in the back of the net to end the quarter, then made a statement in the final period.

At the start of the fourth quarter, Stoller opened with goal number nine of the season to bring the Sharks back within one, 7-6. However, the Seahawks answered following back-to-back goals by Julia Govoni to bring the lead back to three, but the Sharks proved they were not going away. Stoller scored her fourth and final goal of the game with just under two minutes to play in the game.

Registering five saves on the day, senior goalie Nicole Elliott drops to 1-1 on the season.
