Fries, Williams, Sheehan, Bragg Named to GNAC Women's Lax All-Conference Team

WINTHROP, Mass. ? Simmons College women?s lacrosse players Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Lauren Williams (Bowdoinham, Maine) were both named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Second Team, while Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) and Ashley Sheehan (North Attleboro, Mass.) were named Third Team All-Conference, it was announced by the league today. Simmons was just one of two teams in the league to boast a pair of first years on the All-Conference team.

WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons College women's lacrosse players Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Lauren Williams (Bowdoinham, Maine) were both named to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Second Team, while Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) and Ashley Sheehan (North Attleboro, Mass.) were named Third Team All-Conference, it was announced by the league today. Simmons was just one of two teams in the league to boast a pair of first years on the All-Conference team. 

Fries earns a spot on the Second Team for the second straight year after leading the Sharks with 41 goals (the fourth most in school history) and 52 points (fifth-most in school history). The sophomore started all 17 contests and ranked 14th in the league in goals and 15th in points, while standing 20th with 11 assists. The attacker proved to be among the best in the conference in free position situations with 13 markers to place seventh among GNAC leaders. Fries was one of the most dependable scorers in the league, netting at least one goal in all but one match for the season and closed out the string with a nine-match scoring streak. She tallied multiple goals on 10 occasions, including eight goals to go with an assist to tie the school record for points in a game with nine on April 5 in a 20-8 victory at Mount Ida College. Fries also added 27 ground balls to rank third on the team. For her career, the Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School product has started 31 of 32 games, while ranking sixth in school history with 87 points, 70 goals and 17 assists. A Nursing major, Fries stands second all-time at Simmons with 19 lifetime free-position scores in addition to 52 ground balls, 20 draw controls and 16 caused turnovers. 

In just one season, Williams has emerged as one of the top defenders in the GNAC, earning a Second Team selection. The first year ranked fifth among conference leaders in caused turnovers in league-only matches and totaled 20 in all matches for the sixth-highest total ever in school history. The graduate of Mount Ararat High School placed 15th in conference-only matches for ground balls and collected 31 to rank second on the team. Williams was one of three rookies on the team to start all 17 matches and also won a draw control. 

Sheehan was tabbed to the Third Team after ranking fourth in the league with a school-record 82 draw controls, while her 22 caused turnovers is the fourth-most in a season for a Shark and ranked her 15th among GNAC leaders. She caused two or more turnovers in six contests, including a season-best four on April 12 vs. Emmanuel College. The senior started 16 of 17 matches this season and scored 23 goals for the fourth-most on the squad to go with an assist. The midfielder also picked up 26 ground balls for the fourth-highest total on the team. The Bishop Feehan High School graduate won at least one draw in all but one match and registered three or more draw controls in 13 contests, including a school-record 11 draws on March 26 vs. Rivier University. Sheehan also netted multiple markers in five matches, including a season-high of four on a pair of occasions. The Nursing major is the career leader in games played and draw controls at Simmons with 60 and 192, respectively. Sheehan, who has started 56 matches, is among the program's most prolific scorers with 94 career goals and 112 points to rank fourth all-time and also places seventh with 16 career assists. Her 66 caused turnovers place her second all-time for the Sharks, while her 87 ground balls place her ninth in school annals.

Bragg was among the league's most well-rounded players and was tabbed to the Third Team. A graduate of Belmont High School, she was one of just nine players in the league to rank among the top 20 in points (45/20th), assists (16/13th), ground balls (48/11th), draw controls (43/16th) and caused turnovers (18/19th). The midfielder started 16 of 17 matches and led the team in assists and ground balls, while ranking second among Sharks in points, goals (29) and draw controls. The Nursing major put together one of the best all-around seasons for Simmons with the eighth-most points, sixth-most assists, fourth-highest ground balls, fifth-highest draw controls and ninth-most caused turnovers in school history.  The first year also placed third on the team in caused turnovers and was one of the top newcomers in the conference being named Rookie of the Week twice. 

The Sharks finished the season with an 8-9 overall record, including 5-4 in league play to finish fifth in the conference standings. Simmons advanced to the quarterfinals of the GNAC Championship Tournament.
