Bragg Tallies Eight Points to Lead Lacrosse over Mass. Maritime, 16-9

BOSTON, Mass. ? First year midfielder Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) tallied a career-high eight points, including four goals to lead the Simmons College women?s lacrosse team to a 16-9 victory over visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy this afternoon at Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Buccaneers fall to 2-2.

BOSTON, Mass. – First year midfielder Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) tallied a career-high eight points, including four goals to lead the Simmons College women's lacrosse team to a 16-9 victory over visiting Massachusetts Maritime Academy this afternoon at Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks improve to 3-2 on the season, while the Buccaneers fall to 2-2. 

Simmons outshot Mass. Maritime, 46-22, including 27-8 in the second half. 

Bragg added four ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover to her day for the Sharks, while sophomore midfielder Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) netted four goals and added an assist to go with three ground balls, a draw control and a caused turnover. Senior middie Ashley Sheehan (North Attleboro, Mass.) also scored four times in addition to four ground balls and a match-high seven draw controls and three caused turnovers. 

First year goalie Kenzie Rogers (Bourne, Mass.) earned the victory, making four saves in 53:29 of action, before sophomore goalie Chyenne Yeager (Indiana, Pa.) stopped the only shot she faced in the final 6:31 of play for Simmons. 

Sophomore attacker Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.) led the Buccaneers with four goals to go with a ground ball and a draw control, while senior midfielder Molly Smith (Westwood, Mass.) registered three points, including a pair of goals and added four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Junior midfielder Ashley Solari (Sandwich, Mass.) and junior attacker Christina Murphy (Forestdale, Mass.) each contributed for the visitors with a goal and an assist apiece. 

Sophomore netminder Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) recorded 14 saves for Mass. Maritime. 

Hunt put the Buccaneers on the board first with a goal coming just 55 seconds into the match. The Sharks scored the next six goals to take a 6-1 advantage with 19:09 showing in the opening period. Bragg scored four times during the stretch, while Sheehan and Fries each scored as well. 

Simmons looked in control, but Mass. Maritime answered with three straight scores. Solari found the back of the net at the 18:23 mark, followed by a pair of goals from Smith to pull the Buccaneers to within 6-4 with 14:22 left in the first half. 

The teams traded the next four goals, including a score from Hunt with just 25 ticks left in the period to cut the deficit to 8-6 for Mass. Maritime before the intermission. 

The Sharks scored the first three goals of the second stanza to increase their lead to 11-6 with 20:42 to go in the match, courtesy of a pair of goals from Sheehan and a marker from Fries. 

The Buccaneers tallied three of the next four goals to pull to within 12-9, including a player down goal from Hunt, an advantage score from Murphy and the first collegiate goal from first year attacker Meghan Doherty (Malden, Mass.) at the 6:31 mark of the second period. 

The Simmons defense held Mass. Maritime scoreless for the remainder of the contest, while the offense reeled off four unanswered goals, including a pair from senior attacker Alexa Faria (Cumberland, R.I.) in the final two-plus minutes of play. 

The Sharks return to action on Tuesday, March 22 when they host Curry College at 8:00 p.m. on Winsor Field, while the Buccaneers host State University of New York Purchase on March 23 at 7:00 p.m.
