Giarrusso Leads Lacrosse over Manhattanville, 7-5

BOSTON, Mass. ? First year midfielder Analise Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) tallied her first three collegiate goals to lead the Simmons College women?s lacrosse team to a 7-5 victory over visiting Manhattanville College this afternoon at Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. in the season opener for both teams. The Sharks improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Valiants fall to 0-1. The victory was also the first for Simmons Head Coach Taylor Bastien, who is in her first year with the Sharks.

BOSTON, Mass. – First year midfielder Analise Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) tallied her first three collegiate goals to lead the Simmons College women's lacrosse team to a 7-5 victory over visiting Manhattanville College this afternoon at Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. in the season opener for both teams. The Sharks improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Valiants fall to 0-1. The victory was also the first for Simmons Head Coach Taylor Bastien, who is in her first year with the Sharks.

Giarusso also added four ground balls, controlled three draws and caused four turnovers for Simmons, while classmate Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) netted a pair of goals and added an assist to go with three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. First year midfielder Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) scored a goal, picked up three ground balls and caused a turnover, while sophomore midfielder Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) netted a goal and came up with a ground ball.
Junior midfielder Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J.) led Manhattanville with three goals, seven ground balls and six caused turnovers, while first year midfielder Kat Reilly (Holbrook, N.Y.) came off the bench to score twice and collect a pair of ground balls.
Giarrusso's second tally of the day opened the second half scoring for Simmons when she scored 3:21 into the period on a free position attempt to give the home team a 5-3 lead. She scored again less than four minutes later when Maiewski found her for her third score of the game with 22:54 left in the second half for a 6-3 margin. Simmons took advantage of a player-up situation when Maiewski scored a goal of her own just 1:45 later to give the Sharks their largest lead of the afternoon at 7-3 with 20:09 remaining in the match. 

Manhattanville held Simmons scoreless for the rest of the game, while scoring a pair of goals to pull within 7-5, but it was as close as the Valiants would get for the rest of the contest. Junior midfielder Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J.) scored with 10:14 showing in the second half and found the back of the net again with 77 seconds left in the match.

Fries put the Sharks on the board with a free position shot coming 4:08 into the match. Manhattanville pulled even following Dalsey's first score of the season at 19:37 of the first period. 

The Simmons defense held the Valiants without a goal over the next 18 minutes, while the offense scored three unanswered goals to open up a 4-1 cushion. Giarrusso scored her first collegiate goal on a free position shot at 18:51, before Maiewski tallied her first career goal just over 10 minutes later to give the home team a 3-1 margin. Bragg gave the Sharks a 4-1 lead with her first collegiate goal coming with a player advantage at the 2:44 mark of the first period.

Manhattanville closed to within a goal before the intermission, with first year midfielder Kat Reilly Holbrook, N.Y.) scoring a pair of goals within a span of 13 seconds to cut the deficit to 4-3.

First year goalie Kenzie Rogers (Bourne, Mass.) earned her first collegiate victory with 10 saves, while the Sharks held the Valiants scoreless on eight free position attempts. Junior goalie Lauren Cassidy (Oceanside, N.Y.) turned away 14 shots on goal for Manhattanville.
 
Simmons returns to action on Tuesday, March 8 when it heads to Henniker, N.H. to take on New England College at 4:00 p.m., while the Valiants travel to Hackettstown, N.J. to play Centenary College a 3:00 p.m. on March 10.
