Sheehan Leads Lacrosse at Albertus Magnus, 20-4

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior midfielder Ashley Sheehan (North Attleboro, Mass.) matched a career high with seven points, including a game-high six goals to lead the Simmons College women's lacrosse team to a 20-4 victory over Albertus Magnus College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Celentano Field in New Haven, Conn.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior midfielder Ashley Sheehan (North Attleboro, Mass.) matched a career high with seven points, including a game-high six goals to lead the Simmons College women's lacrosse team to a 20-4 victory over Albertus Magnus College this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Celentano Field in New Haven, Conn. The Sharks improve to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in league play, while the Falcons fall to 1-7 and 0-4.

Simmons dominated the shots by a count of 36-7 for the match.

Junior attacker Kelly Kennedy (North Branford, Conn.) scored the first goal of the afternoon for Albertus Magnus on a free position shot just 70 seconds into the contest, but it would be the home team's last lead of the day as the Sharks reeled off 11 unanswered goals over the next 23-plus minutes. Sheehan, first year middie Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) and senior attacker Stephanie Oliveri (Waltham, Mass.) all tallied three goals apiece, while junior midfielder Alexia Malone Oliver (Bristol, R.I.) returned from injury to net a pair of goals during the scoring spree for Simmons. 

First year attacker Jenny Luna (Brentwood, N.Y.) broke up the visitors' scoring string with another free position marker for the Falcons, coming with 3:44 to go in the half, to cut the deficit to 11-2, but junior midfielder Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) joined the scoring with a Sharks' goal just 37 ticks shy of the period's final horn to give Simmons a 12-2 advantage at the intermission.

Kennedy began the second half the same way as the first with her second tally of the day for Albertus Magnus coming 1:12 into the new period and the Sharks responded in kind with eight straight goals to put the game out of reach. Sheehan led the second half charge with three more scores, while Gilbert and Fries also added a goal each to their respective totals for the day. Senior defender Symonne Fontenot (Portsmouth, N.H.) found the back of the net for her first marker of the season, while first year attacker Kiera Kirkaldy (Middlebury, Vt.) netted her second goal of the season. First year attacker Chyenne Yeager (Indiana, Pa.) got on the board as well with her first collegiate goal.

Luna capped the afternoon's scoring for the Falcons with 1:16 showing on the second half clock to make it 20-4.

Senior goalie Crystal Derosier (Kingston, Mass.) earned the win for Simmons with a pair of saves, while junior keeper Maria Case (West Haven, Conn.) stopped 11 shots for Albertus Magnus.

Sheehan led all players on the draw as well with five draw controls to go with three ground balls and a caused turnover for the Sharks. Gilbert finished with three points, including an assist and was outstanding on the defensive side of the ball with a match-best five caused turnovers in addition to four ground balls and three winning draws. Fontenot contributed with four ground balls and three caused turnovers, while Fries finished with five points on four goals and an assist and added three ground balls, a caused turnover and a draw control.

Luna added three ground balls and a pair of draw controls to her two goals for the Falcons, while first year Amanda Montano (North Haven, Conn.) led the defense with three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.

Simmons returns to action on Saturday, March 28 when it travels to Weston, Mass. to take on Regis College at 1:00 p.m., while Albertus Magnus plays GNAC foe University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) on the same day at 3:45 p.m. on the campus of Central Connecticut State University.
