BOSTON, Mass. -- After the most successful season in program history in 2013, Simmons Lacrosse will open their 2014 campaign Saturday with the goal of returning to the Great Northeast Athletic Conference finals. The Sharks, who went 10-4, 7-2 GNAC last spring, fell to the Lasell College Lasers by just one goal in the Conference championship and are out for redemption.

Simmons returns a veteran squad anchored by senior defenseman Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.), who received GNAC Defense Player of the Year accolades in 2013. Junior goalkeeper Crystal Derosier (Kingston, Mass.) earned the starting role midway through last season and will continue to dominate between the pipes. Also returning on defense is junior Symonne Fontenot (Portsmouth, N.H.), whose composure and consistency will be crucial for the Sharks in the defensive zone.

On the offensive side, Simmons returns their second leading scorer, sophomore Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.), whose speed and athleticism make her tough to defend. Ashley Sheehan's (North Attleboro, Mass.) vision and awareness in the midfield will be vital to the Sharks transition game and Stephanie Oliveri (Waltham, Mass.) and Becca Shea (Quincy, Mass.) will dictate the Simmons offense with quick and unselfish play.

"Being so close to victory at the end of last season has really driven the team to go above and beyond this year. But we have to prove that we can get their again and come out on top this season," said Head Coach Amanda Maxwell.

Joining the Sharks roster are four new faces, Allie McDevitt (Greenland, N.H.) on defense, Sara Rademacher (North Haven, Conn.) in the midfield, Alexa Faria (Cumberland, R.I.) on attack and Amber Verrill (Windham, Maine) in goal, all of whom are expected to be active contributors in every game.

The Sharks open their regular season on Saturday against Regis College at 11 AM, and play five non-conference games before GNAC competition resumes on Mar. 15 against Anna Maria. The Mar. 29 game at Lasell will be a rematch of last year's championship and will certainly be one to watch.

"The team is made up of very dedicated and determined individuals who truly understand teamwork.  Our team dynamic and chemistry is very positive and driven which will lead to success on the field," said Maxwell.
