Simmons Trumps Massachusetts Maritime 18-2

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Freshman Stephanie Oliveri (Waltham, Mass.) netted four goals and three assists for seven points to lead Simmons to an 18-2 non-league college women?s lacrosse victory over Massachusetts Maritime Monday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons Lacrosse fell to the Norwich University Cadets, 12-8 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Winsor fields. Grace Fitzpatrick led both teams with five goals to keep the Cadets undefeated at 6-0.

Junior Rachel Wallace (Braintree, Mass.) added a hat trick and an assist for four points for the visiting Sharks (1-1), who netted the final 10 markers of the half en route to a 12-1 advantage at the break. Junior Emily Kaley (Manchester, Maine) also collected a hat trick for Simmons, which received two goals each from senior Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) and freshman Avery Hines (Newburyport, Mass.). Senior Meghan Maurice (Portland, Maine) chipped in with a goal and an assist for the visitors, who also received single tallies off the sticks of sophomore Leanne Luke (Newton, Mass.) and freshmen Caitlin McNamara (Abington, Mass.) and Mary Essa (Las Vegas, Nev.) as well as assists from sophomore Callie Warnock (Kingston, Mass.).

Junior Kim Courcy (Warwick, R.I.) netted both goals in the setback for the host Buccaneers (0-1), who made their intercollegiate varsity debut as a member of the New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance with the contest. Courcy collected the first tally in team history 11:09 into the match, and her second marker of the night was set up on a feed from freshman Deb Langley (Abington, Mass.).

Junior Kelly Last (West Haven, Conn.) made four saves over 53-plus minutes of play to pick up the win in goal for Simmons, while junior Shelagh Hogan (North Andover, Mass.) and freshman Tenley Gillett (Manchester, N.H.) combined for three stops in the Massachusetts Maritime cage. The Sharks outshot the Buccaneers by a 26-7 margin for the match and forced 22 turnovers by the hosts, who held a 12-10 edge in draw controls.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts UMass Dartmouth in a non-league outing on Thursday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Simmons hosts Wellesley in a non-league match on Wednesday evening at Winsor Field in Boston that also begins at 7:00 p.m.
