Sharks Lacrosse Explodes for 17 Goals in GNAC Win

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Simmons Lacrosse rolled to a 17-3 win over the Saint Joseph College Blue Jays Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action. Senior Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) tallied four goals to lead the Sharks to their fifth conference win of the season.

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Simmons Lacrosse rolled to a 17-3 win over the Saint Joseph College Blue Jays Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action. Senior Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) tallied four goals to lead the Sharks to their fifth conference win of the season.

Simmons capitalized twice in the opening minute of play when Becca Shea (Quincy, Mass.) found Rachel Wallace (Braintree, Mass) in the arc to take the lead 1-0. Freshman Stephanie Oliveri (Waltham, Mass.) added an unassisted goal less than 15 seconds later. Shea scored twice in the first half to increase the Sharks lead to four before the Blue Jays got on the board off a goal from Dayna Gambino.

Wallace beat Blue Jays goalkeeper Brianna Tenore to maintain the Sharks four goal lead and Sutherland added two before the half expired to enter the intermission, 8-1.

Seven Sharks scored goals in the second half, Oliveri and Caitlin McNamara (Abington, Mass.) picked up two goals apiece, while Avery Hines (Newburyport, Mass.), Mary Essa (Las Vegas, Nev.), Wellie Antonellis (Keene, N.H.), Leanne Luke (Newton, Mass.), and Sutherland each added one. The Blue Jays picked up goals from Giovanna Piasecki and Gambino but Sharks goalkeeper Kelly Last (West Haven, Conn.) picked up the win as the Sharks improved to 6-7 overall, and 5-3 in the GNAC.

Simmons returns to the field on April 17th when they host Anna Maria at 7:00 p.m.
