Sharks Drop Season Opener to Wellesley, 17-2

Simmons Lacrosse was defeated by Wellesley College, 17-2, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue held Simmons to just nine total shots en route to victory, and remain a perfect 4-0 on the season.

Simmons Lacrosse was defeated by Wellesley College, 17-2, in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue held Simmons to just nine total shots en route to victory, and remain a perfect 4-0 on the season.

The Blue built an 11-0 lead at the break, holding a 20-6 advantage in shots, with goalkeeper Mary Mattia saving all four shots on goal she faced. Wellesley continued to roll in the second half, scoring six goals, while the Sharks got on the board with two of their own. The Blue held a slim 9-7 advantage in shots, but cruised to the 17-2 final.

Britt Mscisz and Meagan Fuchs each tallied game-highs of five points to lead Wellesley. Mscisz recorded four goals and an assist, while Fuchs picked up three goals and two helpers. Also for the Blue, Allison Robbins scored three times, while Jenny Holland, Elizabeth Clemetson and Kate Longergan all added three-point performances. In goal, Mattia finished the day with seven saves and only two goals allowed.

Simmons's offense was paced by goals from junior Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) and junior Meaghan Maurice (Portland, Maine). Freshman Leanne Luke (Newton, Mass.) led all players with six ground balls, while sophomore Meg Coffey (Wilmot, N.H.) added five ground balls and three caused turnovers. In goal, sophomore Kelly Last (West Haven, Conn.) posted eight saves for the Sharks.

Both teams return to the field on Monday. Wellesley travels to Clermont, FL, for a 10:00am match-up against the University of Scranton, while Simmons hosts Anna Maria under the lights at 7:00pm.
