Crew Competes at Charles River Basin Rowing Series with MIT, Vermont and Bates

BOSTON, Mass. - The Simmons College crew team competed in a pair of Varsity Eight races vs. host Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Vermont and Bates College this morning on the Charles River in Boston/Cambridge, Mass.

BOSTON/CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Simmons College crew team competed in a pair of Varsity Eight races vs. host Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Vermont and Bates College this morning on a windswept Charles River in Boston/Cambridge, Mass.

The two Novice races were canceled for the day, due to the unfavorable conditions.

The Sharks second Varsity Eight comprised of senior Laura Matt (Fairfax Station, Va.), senior Eva Weber (Guilford, Conn.), first year Michelle Crosier (Shrewsbury, Mass.), first year Eleanor Pullan (Northampton, Mass.), junior Jess Randolph (Concord, N.C.), junior Rachel Corning (Ipswich, Mass.), junior Abi Smith (Brookline, Mass.), and first year Karina Bercan (Derry, N.H.) on the bow, while first year Clarice Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) took up the coxswain duties. The crew placed second in the first race of the day. Simmons and Bates led MIT by a boatlength as the crews moved past the MIT boathouse as the shells fought against a strong headwind. The Sharks remained strong to hold off a late charge by MIT to finish three tenths of a second ahead of the Engineers to secure second place with a time of 8:41.48, while MIT crossed the finish at 8:42.23. Bates took the top spot with a time of 7:57.46.

Simmons' top Varsity Eight battled MIT for second place in the day's second race, while Bates led from start to finish. MIT surged ahead in the third 500 meters of the race, only to see the Sharks make a final push last 500 meters in a third-place showing. Bates posted a time of 7:58.80, while MIT clocked in at 8:30.60 to finish just over six seconds ahead the Simmons' squad of first year Phoebe Knox (Scituate, Mass.), first year Ronnie Bennett (Pottstown, Pa.), junior Sophie Stone (Greenland, N.H.), junior Chelsea Foster (Avon, Conn.), first year Erin Lilienthal (East Lyme, Conn.), first year Erica Bartle (Arlington, Mass.), senior Nicole Poirier (Wayland, Mass.), with junior Jill Bolduc (Methuen, Mass.) and sophomore Olivia Smiaroski (Northfield, Mass.) directing the crew from the coxswain seat, which posted a mark of 8:36.70. Vermont placed fourth at 8:43.10.

The Sharks will compete again on Saturday, April 11 when they compete in the Donahue Cup.
