Gonyea Registers Career Game as Field Hockey Offense Explodes over Elms

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Junior forward Sydney Gonyea registered a career single-game best nine points as Simmons field hockey 99-3, 5-3 GNAC) exploded to an 11-0 victory over Elms College (0-12, 0-7 GNAC) on Tuesday evening.  

The Sharks struck first in the opening two minutes. Senior Aria Badra connected with junior Anna Tedeschi in the first minutes, then 47 seconds later Tedeschi fed Gonyea for her first of the game as Simmons was off to the races. In the first period alone the Sharks recorded four goals including a penalty stroke goal by first-year Lily Taglieri.

Heading into the second quarter with a four-goal lead, the Sharks continued to pour on the offense. Gonyea found first-year Ava Kahl in front of the cage for the fifth Simmons goal and take a 5-0 lead into the halftime break.

When the two teams returned to the field at the start of the third quarter, Gonyea connected with Taglieri for her second goal of the game to put the Sharks in front, 6-0. Two minutes later, junior Emilia Elko dished the ball to Gonyea to increase the Simmons lead to seven.

The Sharks added another four goals in the final stanza of the contest. Tedeschi, Kahl and junior Hannah Groves all registered their second goals of the contest before Gonyea capped off the scoring with her third in the 58th minute.

First-year goalkeeper Sam Buck improved to 4-0 on the season after playing all 60 minutes in the cage.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior Sydney Gonyea eclipsed her career single-game high in points and assists, recording nine points with three goals and three assists.
  • First-year Ava Kahl's two goal night was a career single-game best.
  • Fellow first-year Lilly Taglieri tied her single-game high for goals with two on the night.
  • Five different players recorded two or more goals in the contest: Gonyea (3), Tedeschi (2), Kahl (2), Taglieri (2) and Groves (2).
