Field Hockey Suffers Setback in New Hampshire

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Simmons field hockey (3-1, 2-1 GNAC) suffered their first defeat of the year falling to Colby-Sawyer College, on the road, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Tuesday evening.

The Chargers set the tone early, controlling the majority of the first quarter. Following subsequent penalty corners late in the period, Colby-Sawyer snuck one by first-year goalkeeper Haley Bright to take the 1-0 lead.

It remained that way throughout a scoreless second quarter. Simmons managed to keep a charged-up Charger offense off the board and minimize the damage to just one goal heading into the halftime break.

When the teams emerged for the start of the second half, it appeared momentum was shifting benches. The Sharks were awarded a pair of penalty corners early in the third and were able to test the Charger goalkeeper Carly Bernard.

They were finally able to breakthrough in the 36th minute. Junior forward Sydney Gonyea found classmate Anna Tedeschi for her conference-leading sixth goal of the season for the equalizer. However, just before the quarter concluded the Chargers went back on top by a goal, before registering an insurance goal late in the fourth to remain undefeated in conference play.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior Anna Tedeschi scored her conference-leading sixth goal of the game to tie the score at 1-1 in the third quarter.
  • Fellow junior Sydney Gonyea tacked on her fourth assist and sit second amongst conference leaders.
  • First-year goalkeeper Haley Bright suffered the loss despite registering 10 saves.
