STANDISH, Maine – Simmons field hockey (8-5, 6-3 GNAC) snapped Saint Joseph's College of Maine's (12-3, 8-1 GNAC) 25-game regular season win-streak versus conference opponents following a 2-1 victory on the road, Wednesday evening.
The win marked the Sharks first win over the Monks since 2015, when Simmons defeated Saint Joseph's (ME), 1-0, on November 7, 2015 for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) title.
The two teams battled each other throughout a scoreless first half, before first-year Hannah Groves broke up the stalemate with a goal in the 43rd minute. Simmons added an insurance goal in the fourth quarter, when Emilia Elko found the back of the goal to give the Sharks the two-goal cushion.
It was a goal they need, because the Monks' Molly McCluskey cut the Shark lead in half scoring in the 56th minute. But it was not enough as the Sharks held on for the 2-1 win.
Junior goalkeeper Emma Sheehan picked up her eighth victory of the season, registering nine saves.
SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS
- The win marked Simmons' first win over Saint Joseph's (ME) since 2015 when they defeated the Monks twice – a 2-0 win on Oct. 3, 2015 and a 1-0 win in the GNAC Championship game on Nov. 7, 2015
- First-year Emilia Elko has scored in three of the last four games for the Sharks, including registering two game-winners in two of the last three games.
- Junior Emma Sheehan earned her eighth win of the season, registering nine saves.
