BRIGHTON, Mass. – Simmons field hockey (4-4, 2-2 GNAC) drop a 4-1 decision to Rivier University (2-5, 1-2 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action, Saturday morning.
The Raiders struck first in the 11th minute, when Kayla Miles snuck the ball past reigning GNAC goalkeeper of the week Emma Sheehan. After Rivier pushed its lead to two goals in the 18th minute, the Sharks answered and cut the lead in half. First-year Hannah Groves connected with junior Emma Strandson in front of the net to put Simmons on the board.
But it was as close as Simmons was able to get. Rivier added two more goals in the third and fourth quarters as Raider goalkeeper Katie Olsen kept the Shark offense at bay for the remainder of the game to earn her second win of the season
Sharks junior goalkeeper Emma Sheehan took the loss, dropping her to 4-4 on the season, including 2-2 in GNAC play. Fellow junior goalkeeper Sarah Arenberg started the second half in net and recorded a save.
SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS
- Junior Emma Strandson registered her first collegiate career goal, cutting the Raider lead in half in the 19th minute.
- First-year Hannah Groves assist on Strandson's goal was her third of the season.
- Senior Emily Plummer and first-year Sydney Gonyea led the Sharks in shots with six each. Gonyea put all six on net while, Plummer posted three shots-on-goal.
