Field Hockey Falls at Westfield State, 3-0

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The Simmons University field hockey team was defeated by host Westfield State University this evening, 3-0, at Alumni Field in Westfield, Mass. The Sharks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Owls improve to 2-1.

Westfield State owned a 12-8 shot advantage and scored one goal each in three different quarters.

Junior midfielder Maggie Fuzak (Buffalo, N.Y.) led the Simmons offensive effort with four shots, while first year midfielder Maddie Beckwith (Winslow, Maine) fired three shots on frame. Junior keeper Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) made five saves for the Sharks.

Shannon Roycroft (Centerville, Mass.) led the Owls with a pair of goals, while Riley Goulet (Old Rochester, Mass.) stopped six shots to earn the shutout. 

Westfield State took a 1-0 lead 12:40 into the contest as Jill Hamel (Uxbridge, Mass.) blasted a shot from the top of the circle that Roycroft deflected up into the cage. 

The Owls added a second marker six minutes later, as Allie Giguere (Lynn, Mass.) slapped home a cross from senior midfielder Anna Mathews (Auburn, Mass.) for a 2-0 lead.  

Roycroft netted her second tally of the game with 10:44 left in regulation, two-touching a cross from Cheryl Latona (Granby, Conn.) into the back of the cage for a 3-0 Westfield State lead.

Simmons returns to action on Saturday, September 7 when it hosts University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Daly Field at 11:00 a.m., while the Owls will be back in action on the same day, traveling to Nashua, N.H. to take on Rivier University for a 1:00 p.m. non-conference game.
