GILBERT, Ariz. – Simmons University field hockey player Meghan Fontaine (Westminster, Mass.) was named to the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association New England East Region Second Team, it was announced today by the NFHCA.
The Sharks have had six players earn All-Region status, including four to the First Team in the past five seasons.
Fontaine's All-Region honor caps an outstanding campaign for the Simmons back. The honor comes a few weeks after the senior was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference honoree. Fontaine started all 18 matches she appeared in for the Sharks and was a lockdown defender for the squad, featuring superior stick skills and an uncanny ability to control the pace of a game. The back was outstanding in transition for Simmons with relentless effort that often resulted in a caused turnover. The Oakmont Regional High School graduate tallied five points with a goal and three assists for the Sharks and was a key member of the team's penalty corner unit with a punishing shot from the top of the circle. The Nursing major helped Simmons post a 2.35 goals against average to rank third among conference team leaders and contributed to a defensive front that posted three shutouts and held opponents to one or fewer goals on six occasions.
Fontaine finished her career as a two-time All-Conference honoree after a Second Team selection in 2017 and has been named to the Zag Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Academic Squad as well as the GNAC All-Academic Team in each of the last two seasons. The Massachusetts native saw action in 66 contests, while making 46 starts and tallied 24 points on seven goals and 10 assists in addition to a pair of defensive saves during her tenure at the Fenway school.
The Sharks finished the season with a 7-12 record, including 4-3 in conference play and earned the number four seed in the GNAC Championship Tournament, before bowing out in the semifinals.
