BOSTON, Mass. – The Simmons University field hockey team was defeated by visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 6-0, this evening at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Engineers improve to 2-0.
MIT dominated play, owning a 20-3 shot advantage and a 17-1 margin on penalty corners.
Junior midfielder Devon Goetz (Rockville, Md.) tallied a pair of goals and added an assist to lead MIT. Goetz had a hand in the first three goals of the game for the Engineers. She put the visitors on the board just over six minutes into the match when senior forward Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md.) sent a cross to the front of the cage, where Goetz found the back of the cage with 28:35 left in the opening half. Goetz notched her second marker of the night and team-leading fifth of the season with just 3:55 left in the first period when she took a feed from first year forward Mia Reilly (Los Angeles, Calif.) and ripped a shot into the far left post for a 3-0 MIT lead. Goetz contributed to the night's second goal as well when she sent the ball to the left post, where first year Emily Genevriere (San Jose, Calif.) scored on a tip-in with 6:49 left in the half for her first collegiate score.
First year midfielder Laura Chen (Califon, N.J.) registered her first collegiate goal as well to open the second half scoring for the Engineers, before sophomore forward Amanda Garofalo (Fairfield, N.J.) scored her third goal of the year with less than 20 minutes to go in the match. Tregoning capped the scoring with an assist from Garofalo with 3:14 remaining in the game.
Junior forward Olivia Trull (Lowell, Mass.) paced the Simmons offense with a pair of shots.
Sophomore keeper Grace Moore (Boston, Mass.) turned away the only shot on goal to earn her 10th career shutout for MIT, while junior Danielle Francis (Oxford, Mass.) made six saves in her first collegiate start for the Sharks.
Simmons returns to action on Tuesday, September 4 when it hosts Worcester Polytechnic Institute at 6:00 p.m. on Daly Field, while the Engineers head to Wenham, Mass. on September 5 to take on Gordon College at 6:00 p.m.
