BOSTON, Mass. – The Simmons College field hockey team was defeated by visiting Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 2-0, this afternoon at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 0-2 on the season, while the Engineers even their record at 1-1.

The match was the first-ever played on the field hockey field at the Daly Athletics Complex.

Both teams fired five shots and seven penalty corners were awarded to each squad.

Senior forward Allie Buckley (Worcester, Mass.) put WPI on the board just 3:55 into the match when classmate Hope Shevchuk found her for her first tally of the season for a 1-0 edge. Defense ruled for the remainder of the half as both teams were unable to find the back of the cage.

Buckley dictated the Engineers' second score as well. The forward carried the ball into the box and sent a short cross to the middle of the cage, where senior forward Jena Mazzucco (Danbury, Conn.) connected for her first marker of the year at the 52:42 mark of the second half.

Simmons threatened just over 10 minutes into the contest when junior forward Julie Saltamartini's (East Hampstead, N.H.) scoring effort was thwarted by Engineers' senior goalie Karen Noble (Mariaville, Maine), who came out to meet the attack. Junior Sammy Rondeau (Franklin, Mass.) picked up the rebound, but was also turned back by Noble.

Noble finished the day with four saves for WPI to earn her first collegiate shutout, while senior keeper Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) stopped three shots for the Sharks.

Simmons will be in action again on Thursday, September 8 when it hosts Nichols College on Daly Field at 7:00 p.m., while the Engineers host Bridgewater State University in their home opener on September 6 at 4:30 p.m.
