NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Simmons College field hockey team was defeated by host Smith College, 2-0, this evening in Northampton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 7-3 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 4-4.

Smith controlled the opening half with a 12-3 shot advantage and owned a 16-6 margin on shots for the match. The Pioneers also doubled up Simmons with a 10-5 cushion in penalty corners.

Despite the shot advantage, the Sharks held the Pioneers scoreless through most of the first half, until the home team broke into the scoring column with just 30 seconds left in the period. Senior forward Kat Estes (Falmouth, Mass.) found first year forward Bayleigh Bogan (Encinitas, Calif.) off a penalty corner for a direct shot that resulted in her fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.

Smith struck again just 2:10 into the second half for a 2-0 lead. Junior forward Elsie Odhiambo (Oyugis, Kenya) took a pass from sophomore midfielder Mariah Ollive (Milton, Vt.) and dribbled down the endline and around the Simmons keeper for her fourth tally of the year.

The Sharks' defense held the Pioneers scoreless on just three shots for the remainder of the half, but were unable to get on the board for the first time this season.

Junior keeper Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) made a season-high 10 saves for Simmons, while sophomore Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y.) stopped all four shots she saw for her first collegiate shutout for Smith.

The Sharks return to action on Saturday, October 3 when they host Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe Saint Joseph's College (Maine) at 11:00 a.m. on Winsor Field, while the Pioneers host Wellesley College on the same day at 12:00 p.m.
