BOSTON, Mass. -- Simmons field hockey recorded two shots off a corner with time expired but were unable to convert as the WPI Engineers went on to win, 3-2 in non-conference action Tuesday evening in the Sharks final home game of the season.

WPI took a 1-0 lead at 21:42 in the first half when Stephanie Symecko converted on a shot by Grace Davis. The Sharks responded less than two minutes, forcing a penalty corner. Amy Cronin (Georgetown, Mass.) inputted the ball to Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.) who drove the ball towards WPI goalkeeper Liz Dufresne but Cronin got a stick on it and tipped the shot into the back of the net to tie the game at one.

The Sharks took the lead just 28 seconds into the second half when Monica Doucette (Rockport, Maine) intercepted a ball from the WPI defense and sent a cross to the left side where Kelly Williamson (Natick, Mass.) tipped it past Lauren Puishys. But the Engineers were persistent and tied the game at two off a goal by Mercedes Kuzina at 37:26.

Both teams battled in the midfield but Puishys and Sharks goalkeeper Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine) came up big to keep the game tied at two despite a ten-minute man up advantage for the Sharks.

At 57:17, the Engineers broke the stalemate as Megan Read drove a ball into the Sharks circle and found the back of the net of a defenders stick for what would become the game winning goal. Simmons was relentless, forcing a corner and two shots as time expired but WPI held on for the win.

Liz Dufresne and Lauren Puishys combined for three saves, while Smith posted 12 saves in the loss for the Sharks. WPI held a large advantage in shots, 24-8 and both teams were awarded eight corners.

The Sharks begin their playoff run on Saturday, October 27th when they travel to the University of Maine at Farmington for a 1:00 p.m. North Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal match.
