Sharks Swim Past Lasers 4-2

BOSTON, Mass. – Lee Sutherland (Wolfeboro, N.H.) tallied two goals and assisted two more as Simmons Field Hockey edged the Lasell College Lasers 4-2 in North Atlantic Conference action Saturday afternoon.

The Sharks dominated play from the first whistle but it was the Lasers who did the scoring in the first half on a speedy run by Hannah Cebry at 8:34. The half was played in the midfield, with changes of possession and quality chances from both sides. Despite a 14-3 advantage in shots, the Sharks were unable to convert.

Forty-two seconds into the second half, Lasell was awarded a penalty corner where Taylor Hulitzky slipped a shot past Simmons goalkeeper Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine). After a timeout by Simmons, the Sharks offense exploded with four goals. Sutherland buried her first shot off a tip from senior Katelyn Tighe (Easton, Mass.) Less than ten minutes later, Sutherland rifled a shot past Lasers goalkeeper Christine Thornton off a long ball from sophomore Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.) to tie the game at two.

Sutherland returned the favor at 61:33, as she fed Tighe who found the back of the net to give the Sharks the lead. Freshman Kelly Williamson (Natick, Mass.) added an insurance goal at 68:59 off a give and go from Mercedes Godin (Essex Junction, Vt.) and Sutherland.

The Sharks held a 16-4 advantage in penalty corners and Lasers goalkeeper made an impressive 27 saves in the loss.

Simmons Field Hockey returns to action on Wednesday, October 26th when they travel to WPI for a 7:00 p.m. contest. The Lasers host Fitchburg State on October 25th at 4:00 p.m.
