Sharks Fall to Monks, 5-1

Simmons Field Hockey romped to their second shutout of the season, 9-0, over Pay Path College on Saturday at home. Freshman TJ Cowin (Newry Maine) led the Simmons offense with 3 goals and 2 assists on the day to boost the team to 2-2 overall, while Bay Path fell to 0-3 on the season.

Courtney Rague also scored twice for the Monks and Sarah Bartell chipped in with a marker in the SJC offensive onslaught.

Nowell opened the game scoring just 2:10 after the opening whistle and proceeded to score her second goal of the match at the 16:15 mark to provide the Royal Blue with a 2-0 cushion. Rague beat Sharks netminder Renna Smith (Belfast, Maine) four minutes later off a Nowell dish to give the Monks a 3-0 lead heading into intermission.

Bartell netted her seventh goal of the year in the 48th minute off Nowell's second helper of the afternoon and Simmons rookie TJ Cowin (Newry, Maine) steered a shot past St. Joe's keeper Jackie Goodell nine minutes later, off a Monica Doucette (Rockport, Maine) pass, to make it a 4-1 game. With 52 seconds remaining, Rague capped the action with her ninth tally of the season off an Alyssa Dunn feed.

Smith made 13 saves for the Sharks, while St. Joe's keepers Meaghan Johnson and Goodell combined to face just one shot – Cowin's marker, which was allowed by Goodell.

St. Joe's will host non-conference foe Endicott College on Wednesday at 3:00 PM. Simmons is set to host Western New England on Wednesday at 7:00 PM.
