Field Hockey 2010 Season Review

Simmons Field Hockey is poised to begin the 2010 season under new Head Coach Amanda Maxwell. The Sharks look to improve upon their 4-14 overall and 1-5 North Atlantic Conference record from 2009 under Maxwell?s guidance.

Sixth-seeded Simmons Field Hockey was defeated by third-seeded University of Maine at Farmington, 6-1, in North Atlantic Conference field hockey first-round action Saturday at Prescott Field. With the loss, the Sharks end their season with a 6-11 record, while the Beavers (12-5) are scheduled to visit No. 2 Husson University in the NAC semifinals on Wednesday.

Simmons Field Hockey wrapped up their fall 2010 season with the first trip to the North Atlantic Conference tournament the Sharks have taken in two years. Under first year Head Coach Amanda Maxwell, Simmons fought to a 6-11 overall record and 2-5 NAC record. Despite being knocked out of the tournament in the quarterfinals, the Sharks are ready to continue elevating the program in 2011.

Simmons Field Hockey was named a 2010 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Academic Team, and eight athletes were named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad. The Sharks were recognized for achieving a team GPA of 3.00 or higher in the fall semester, while each athlete named to the Academic Squad earned a 3.30 or better in the fall 2010 semester.

Several returners helped to lead the charge. Junior Kelly Fisher (Yarmouth, Maine) started at right midfield and was moved to left midfield halfway through the season. "She is a quiet but competitive player who was always able to control her side of the field," said Maxwell.

Junior Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) started at center-midfield this season, and really learned to control the midfield. Maxwell notes that she was a "fierce competitor, always gave 100%, was always involved in the play."

The first-year athletes contributed right away to the growing program. "They were eager, willing to work hard and competitive," said Maxwell. "Much was asked of them, and they grew tremendously on the field as season progressed."

Freshman Seneca Martensson (East Longmeadow, Mass.) played in the midfield and on defense this season. A versatile player, she stepped in at both positions and made an impact for the Sharks.

Freshman Erin Tollios (North Falmouth, Mass.) was a solid, steady and reliable left back. Tollios "rarely makes mistakes, has great stick skills, made many defensive saves," said Maxwell.

Freshman TJ Cowin (Newry, Maine) led the Sharks' attack, scoring 11 goals and six assists this fall.  "She is very competitive and was our top scorer," said Maxwell.

Junior captain Katelyn Tighe (Easton, Mass.) worked hard to unite the team from the start of pre-season. Tighe also led by example, starting 17 of 17 games, and following right behind Cowin with 6 goals and 8 assists.

The Sharks want to work on the momentum they've created in 2010 and focus on the offseason and fall 2011. "This year we had many highs and lows. Next year I want to play at a consistently high level," said Maxwell. "I am so proud of how far this team has come. They have really grown as field hockey players as well as fierce competitors. We had people play new positions, switch positions on a regular basis, deal with injuries and the girls always put the team first and I believe that contributed to our successful year."
