Field Hockey Receives NFHCA Honors

Simmons Field Hockey is poised to begin the 2010 season under new Head Coach Amanda Maxwell. The Sharks look to improve upon their 4-14 overall and 1-5 North Atlantic Conference record from 2009 under Maxwell?s guidance.

Sixth-seeded Simmons Field Hockey was defeated by third-seeded University of Maine at Farmington, 6-1, in North Atlantic Conference field hockey first-round action Saturday at Prescott Field. With the loss, the Sharks end their season with a 6-11 record, while the Beavers (12-5) are scheduled to visit No. 2 Husson University in the NAC semifinals on Wednesday.

Simmons Field Hockey wrapped up their fall 2010 season with the first trip to the North Atlantic Conference tournament the Sharks have taken in two years. Under first year Head Coach Amanda Maxwell, Simmons fought to a 6-11 overall record and 2-5 NAC record. Despite being knocked out of the tournament in the quarterfinals, the Sharks are ready to continue elevating the program in 2011.

Simmons Field Hockey was named a 2010 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division III National Academic Team, and eight athletes were named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad. The Sharks were recognized for achieving a team GPA of 3.00 or higher in the fall semester, while each athlete named to the Academic Squad earned a 3.30 or better in the fall 2010 semester.

Sophomores Marianna Brown (Newton, N.H.), Molly Maidman (West Hartford, Conn.) and Michaela Sangillo (Gray, Maine), juniors Kelly Fisher (Yarmouth, Maine) and Sasha Reilly (Wilmington, Mass.), and freshmen Courtney Joachim (Concord, Mass.), Monica Doucette (Rockport, Maine) and Erin Tollios (North Falmouth, Mass.) were named to the Academic Squad.

"I am so proud to have eight members of the field hockey team earn this award," said Head Coach Amanda Maxwell. "This is a major accomplishment for them, especially while in season! It shows how dedicated Simmons student athletes are to both academics and athletics."
