Freshman Lee Sutherland (Tuftonboro, N.H.) scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Simmons field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over non-conference foe Wheelock on Tuesday evening at the Winsor School Field.  With the win, the Sharks improve to 5-11, while the Wildcats fall to 3-12.

Nine minutes into the match Simmons struck first when senior captain Katie Bonney (Auburn, Maine) scored off a rebound save from Wheelock goalie Meredith Race.  Just three minutes later, at the 12:17 mark, Sutherland scored an unassisted goal, making the score, 2-0.  With fifteen minutes remaining in the first half, Kim Ganley and Alana Pihl set up Kelsey McAuliffe to get a shot past Simmons goalkeeper Jen Szkolt (Bondsville, Mass.), making the score 2-1, going into halftime.  Junior Emily Sypher gave the Sharks an insurance goal with eight minutes remaining, assisted by Sutherland.

Szkolt made three saves for the Sharks while Race tallied seven stops for the Wildcats.

"We played a few good stretches today to pull out the win," said Head Coach Kate Leonard.  "Overall, our intensity was lacking and we need to pick it up a notch for this weekend. We really need to play together and focus on winning the ball every time.  A strong showing by Lee Sutherland, who continually attacked the Wheelock goalie, kept us in the game today.  Maggie Weeks played a strong second half and was a great example of how good things happen when you cut to the ball.  Jen Szkolt made several great saves, including a couple smart dives.  If we can play a whole game of intense teamwork then we should see good results this weekend."

The Sharks return to action on Saturday, October 25 at 1:00 p.m., as they travel to Standish, Maine to face St. Joseph's (Maine) for a North Atlantic Conference contest.
