Swimming and Diving Captures Four Event Titles; Second in Team Standings of GNAC Championship

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Simmons swimming and diving cut in to Norwich's lead after the second day of 2023 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship Meet, trailing the Cadets by 75.  

The Sharks continued to reel in the medals, winning four individual events. Senior distance swimmer won the 500-yard freestyle, posting a time of 5:33.72, while classmate Sophie Stevenson clocked as season-best time of 5:56.56 to finish fourth and collect 15 points for the Sharks.

With a pair of swimmers competing in the A-finals of the 50-yard freestyle and another one in the consolation finals, the Sharks were able to post another 35 points to their total. First-year Carli Quinlan took second place, being edged out by Norwich's Nikky Avisse by .64 seconds, touching the wall with a season-best time of 24.72. 

Sophomore Hailey Stuck also earned a spot in the championship finals, registering a season-best time of 26.00 in the prelims. In the evening session, Stuck clipped another .23 seconds off her time to place fourth with a time of 25.77. Sophomore Diana Martinez captured three points for the Sharks, competing the consolation finals, finishing with a time of 29.75.

Senior Meg Driscoll added another first-place medal in the 200-yard breaststroke. Driscoll made the mid-distance race a no-contest, beating Norwich's Tiffany Twombly by eight seconds, touching the wall with a time of 2:35.66.

The Sharks closed out the night swimming away from the field in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Caroline Mazariegos, Lily Martin, Sophie Stevenson and Eva Piernas posted a a of 8:39.80, well ahead of the Cadet squad.

  • Senior Meg Driscolled collected her second event champion of the meet, winning the 200-yard breaststroke with a season-best time of 2:35.66
  • Senior Eva Piernas won the 500-yard freestyle clocking a time of 5:33.72 – second best time on the season.
  • Sophomore Camelia Hannah captured the 50-yard backstroke event champion.
  • First-years Lily Martin and Carli Quinlan earned All-Conference second team honors in the 100 fly (1:03.27) and 50 free (24.72).
