Swimming and Diving Drops Non-Conference Dual Meet to Mount Holyoke

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – In their final dual meet before the 2023 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship, Simmons swimming and diving fell to Mount Holyoke College, 152-98, on Saturday afternoon.  

The Sharks' 200-yard medley relay A squad began the day registering the team's third-best time of the season. The foursome of Camelia Hannah, Meg Driscoll, Lily Martin and Carli Quinlan touched the wall with a time of 2:00.70 – a quarter of second slower than their time against Westfield State earlier in the season. Simmons' B quartet of Caroline Mazariegos, Katelyn Quinlan, Sophie Stevenson and Hailey Stuck finished fourth with a time of 2:09.02.

First-year and four-time GNAC Rookie of the Week Carli Quinlan continued to perform well in the freestyle sprints. In the 50-yard free, Quinlan touched the wall one second faster than the Lyons' Adji Diouf, posting a time of 25.89, before edging out Mount Holyoke's Carolina Loayza by 19 hundredths of a second in the 100-yard freestyle.

Junior Caroline Mazariegos was able to secure another first-place finish for the Sharks in the 200-yard backstroke. Mazariegos maintained a razor-thin lead over the Lyons' Maggie Freisthler throughout the entire race which helped her touch the wall with a time of 2:26.44 – 18 hundredths of a second quicker.

In the following event, the 200-yard breaststroke, junior Katelyn Quinlan and senior Meg Driscoll finished first and second. Separated by a quarter of as second Quinlan earned first with a time of 2:42.17, while Driscoll took second with a time of 2:42.42. Quinlan secured her second first-place finish in the final individual even of the day. The Haverhill native registered a season-best time of 2:25.88 in the 200-yard IM.

The Sharks' 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Mazariegos, Martin, Stuck and Quinlan capped off the day with a time of 1:47.72.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Junior Katelyn Quinlan posted a season-best time in the 200-yard IM, touching the wall with a time of 2:25.88.
  • First-year Carli Quinlan earned a pair of first place finishes in the 50 free (25.89) and the 100 free (56.60).
  • Senior Sophie Stevenson recorded a season-best time of 2:19.19 in the 200-yard freestyle to claim second place.
  • Sophomore Diana Martinez bested her previous season-best time in the 50 free by two hundredths of a second, clocking in a time of 30.40.
