Swimming and Diving Sits Fourth After Day One of Seven Sisters Invitational

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – After day one of the Seven Sisters Invitational, Simmons swimming and diving sits in fourth place with 340 points on Saturday afternoon. 

Reigning GNAC Rookie of the Week, first-year Carli Quinlan finished second in a trio of events, including nearly taking first in the 50-yard butterfly. In a tight third race of the day, the host school Mount Holyoke's Carolina Loayza touched the wall four tenths of a second ahead of Quinlan to claim first.

Midway through the meet, Quinlan captured second place in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in with a time of 25.04, while sophomore Hailey Stuck also finished in the top eight. Stuck finished sixth, besting her previous season-best time by one hundredth of a second with a time of 26.70.

Towards the end of day one, Quinlan and senior distance swimmer Eva Piernas both placed in the top five of the 200-yard freestyle. Quinlan claimed her third second place finish posting a time of 2:04.15, while Piernas finished fifth touching the wall with the time of 2:12.77.

The Sharks capped off the first day of the two-day invitational, clipping five tenths of a second off their previous 800-yard freestyle relay time to claim second placed. Clocking in with a time of 8:36.43, the Sharks' quartet of Eva Piernas, Caroline Mazariegos, Katelyn Quinlan, and Carli Quinlan finished once second ahead of Wellesley's B-relay squad.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • First-year swimmer Carli Quinlan finished second in a trio of events: 50 fly (28.13), 50 free (26.04) and the 200 free (2:04.15).
  • The Sharks eclipsed five tenths of a second from their previous season top time in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Eva Piernas, Caroline Mazariegos, Katelyn Quinlan and Carli Quinlan, clocked a time of 8:36.43.
  • Junior Katelyn Quinlan posted a season top time of 1:17.46 in the 100-yard breaststroke to earn the Sharks six points in the overall meet.
  • Senior Meg Driscoll and junior Katelyn Quinlan both bested their season top times in the 200 IM with Driscoll posting a time of 2:26.19 and Quinlan a time of 2:26.17 to claim points for the Sharks.
  • Senior distance swimmer Eva Piernas finished sixth in the 500 free with a time of 5:43.93, while claiming fifth place in the 200 free (2:12.77).
