Swimming and Diving Splits Double Dual with Regis and Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Simmons swimming and diving won eight of 16 events to split Saturday afternoon's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) double dual against Regis College and Colby-Sawyer College. The Sharks defeated the Pride, 148-72, and was edged out by the Chargers, 118-116.

The Sharks began the day strong claiming first place in the 200-yard medley relay. In tight race, the quartet of Camelia Hannah, Meg Driscoll, Katelyn Quinlan, and Carli Quinlan touched the wall a second quicker than the Chargers' A relay squad, clocking in with a time of 2:02.69. 

Senior distance swimmer Eva Piernas picked up a pair of event wins in the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle. Early in the day, Piernas swam away with the 1,000-yard freestyle, touching the wall nearly two minutes ahead of the rest of the field. Later in the meet, she beat out teammate junior Katelyn Quinlan for first place touching the wall with a time of 5:48.64, while Quinlan finished second with a time of 5:50.68. 

In the final individual event of the day, the 100-yard IM, Quinlan placed first with a time of 1:08.72 – three seconds ahead of Regis' Olivia Luhnau. Senior Meg Driscoll finished fourth with a time of 1:11.66 – just half a second behind Luhnau's time for second place. 

First-year swimmer Carli Quinlan secured a pair of first place medals. She edged out the Chargers' Nina Boudreau by four tenths of a second in the 50-yard freestyle (26.39), while posting a time of 57.81 in the 100-yard freestyle.

The Sharks 200-yard freestyle relay squad of Hailey Stuck, Eva Piernas, Sophie Stevenson, and Carli Quinlan closed out the meet with a time of 1:50.20.

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Senior Eva Piernas won both distance events, claiming first place in the 500 free (5:48.64) and the 1,000 free (11:49.34).
  • First-year Carli Quinlan won the 50 free (26.39) and the 100 free (57.81).
  • Sophomore Camelia Hannah won the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 31.41.
