Swimming and Diving Closes Out Fall Semester with Another Strong Showcase on Final Day of the MIT Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Simmons swimming and diving capped of the MIT Invitational with another strong day of performances to finish sixth earning 129.5 points against a trio of national ranked opponents on Sunday.

The Sharks began the final day of the MIT Invitational registering a season-best in the prelims of the 200-yard medley relay. Four the first time this season, the Sharks quartet of Camelia Hannah, Caroline Mazariegos, Lily Martin and Carli Quinlan posted a time of 1:59.57 to qualify for the finals. In the night cap, the Sharks' squad collected two points touching the wall with a time of 2:05.96.

Senior distance swimmer Eva Piernas qualified for the B finals of the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall with a time of 5:29.16 in the prelims, just seven seconds shy of her collegiate-best. In the finals, Piernas registered a time of 5:37.75, while fellow senior Sophie Stevenson clocked a time of 6:21.37 in the C finals.

First-year swimmer Carli Quinlan registered a season-best time of 1:00.60 in the 100-yard butterfly to secure a spot in the B finals. Quinlan was joined in the finals by teammates first-year Lily Martin and Camelia Hannah, who finished back-to-back in the C finals with times of 1:05.7 and 1:08.72, respectively.

Two events later, Quinlan finished third in the C finals of the 100-yard freestyle, touching the wall with a time of 55.30 – six hundredths of a second faster than RPI's Gabriela Crother-Collado. 

Simmons closed out the meet with the 400-yard freestyle relay. The squad of Lily Martin, Hailey Stuck, Caroline Mazariegos and Eva Piernas clocked in with a time of 3:59.16 to pull in 24 points for the Sharks.

  • The Sharks 200-yard medley relay (Camelia Hannah, Caroline Mazariegos, Lily Martin, Carli Quinlan) posted a time of 1:59.57 in the prelims to begin he day.
  • First-year swimmer Carli Quinlan registered a season-best time of 1:00.60 in the prelims of the 100 fly.
  • Quinlan placed third in the C finals of the 100 free, touching the wall with a time of 55.30 – right after eclipsing a season-best time of 54.79 in the prelims earlier in the day.
  • Senior distance swimmer Eva Piernas was seven seconds shy of her top collegiate mark, touching the wall with a time of 5:29.16 in the prelims of the 500 free.
