Swimming and Diving Picks Up a Dual Meet Win Over New England; Martin Posts Personal-Bests

BIDDEFORD, Maine – Traveling to the state of Maine, Simmons swimming and diving won 10 of 14 events to defeat the University of New England, 135-125, in a non-conference dual meet, on Saturday afternoon.

Simmons opened the day taking first-place with ease in the 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of Camelia Hannah, Meg Driscoll, Lily Martin and Carli Quinlan touched the wall with a time of 2:01.88 – three seconds ahead of the Nor'easters' A squad. The Sharks' B-quartet of Caroline Mazariegos, Katie Castle, Sophie Stevenson and Katelyn Quinlan postd a time of 2:13.09.

First-year Lily Martin won three events to lead the Sharks, while senior Eva Piernas and fellow first-year Carli Quinlan followed up with two event wins.

Martin took home her first event win, posting a personal-best time of 1:05.43 in the 100-yard butterfly. Two events later, in a photo finish, she beat out Elli Donovan by four tenths of a second with a time of 59.56 in 100-yard free. Martin secured her third win of the day with another personal-best in the 50-yard butterfly (29.61).  

Piernas swam away from the field in the 1,000-yard free, clocking in eight seconds ahead of UNE's Annika Doeppers with a time of 11:45.09 – tying the time she posted against Wellesley last week. In the second distance event of the day, the 500-yard free, she registered her season-best time as she bested teammate, Katelyn Quinlan by two seconds, touching the wall in 5:47.43.  

Katelyn's younger sister, Carli, set the tone in early in the 200-yard free, clocking in with a time of 2:04.38 to claim first-place. But the spring 50-yard free was much closer. The Haverhill native touched the wall two seconds sooner than the Nor'easters' April Fastad with a time of 25.94.

Junior Caroline Mazariegos won the 100-yard backstroke with a season-best time of 1:07.60 as she touched the wall one second quicker than teammate sophomore Camelia Hannah. Hannah claimed the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 31.08.

The Sharks 200-yard free relay squad of Eva Piernas, Hailey Stuck, Caroline Mazariegos, and Carli Quinlan closed out the day with a time of 1:50.10.  

SIMMONS HIGHLIGHTS

  • First-year Lily Martin won three events against UNE, including posting personal-best times in the 100 fly (1:05.43) and the 50 fly (29.61).
  • Senior Eva Piernas won both the distance events: the 500 free (5:47.23) and the 1,000 free (11:45.09)
  • First-year Carli Quinlan also won two events: 50 free (25.94) and 200 free (2:04.38).
