Nine Members of the Swimming and Diving Program Post Season-Best Performances at Wellesley

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Simmons swimming and diving returned to the pool Friday evening with a non-conference dual meet against a tough Wellesley College program.

The Sharks continued to see improvements in their times. Senior Eva Piernas swam a nearly identical time in the 1,000 -yard freestyle that she posted a week ago against Smith, clocking in with a time of 11:45.68. In the same event, fellow senior Sophie Stevenson clipped a second from her season-best time, touching the wall in 13:05.12.

Later in the meet in the second distance event of the night, the 500-yard freestyle, Stevenson knocked six seconds off her time from the last week. This week she clocked in with a time of 6:20.91 and was one of nine swimmers to record eclipse their personal top times this season.  

Senior Katie Castle saw time come of her previous season times in the 100 breaststroke and the 500 freestyle. In the 100-yard breaststroke she saw four seconds come of her time from the Westfield State meet, touching the wall with a time of 1:31.45, while in the 500-yard freestyle she clocked a time of 7:05.83 – nine seconds better than her time at Smith.

First year Lily Martin secured the Sharks lone first place finish in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 29.68, while posting her season-best time in the 100-yard butterfly (1:06.49).

Sophomore Camelia Hannah and junior Caroline Mazariegos swam exceptional well in the backstrokes. In the 100-yard backstroke, she touched the wall with a season top time of 1:07.65, while in the 200-yard backstroke Mazariegos, posted a time of 2:24.50. 

The Sharks closed out the night competing in the 400-yard freestyle relay for the first time this season. Simmons A squad of Lily Martin, Hailey Stuck, Caroline Mazariegos and Carli Quinlan finished third with a time of 354.55. The B quartet (Sophie Stevenson, Katie Castle, Meg Driscoll, Eva Piernas) finished with a time of 4:26.20.

  • First-year swimmer Lily Martin picked up the Sharks lone first place win, finishing first in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 29.68.
  • Senior Katie Castle eclipsed a pair of season-best times in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:31.45) and the 500-yard freestyle (7:05.83).
  • Castle was one of nine Simmons swimmers to register as season-best time: sophomore Camelia Hannah (100 back, 1:07.65), Katelyn Quinlan (100 breast, 1:18.23), Hailey Stuck (100 free, 59.51), Caroline Mazariegos (200 back, 2:24.50), Sophie Stevenson (500 free, 6:20.91; 1,000 free, 13:05.12), Meg Driscoll (200 breast, 2:42.15), Lily Martin (100 fly, 1:06.49)
