Swimming & Diving Defeats University of New England, 185-77; Scholand Breaks Pool Record

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Áine Scholand (Albuquerque, N.M.) won a pair of events and broke the pool record in the 1650-yard freestyle in a 185-77 victory this afternoon over host University of New England at the Campus Center Pool in Biddeford, Maine. The Sharks improve to 3-5 on the season, while the Nor'Easters fall to 1-3.

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Áine Scholand (Albuquerque, N.M.) won a pair of events and broke the pool record in the 1650-yard freestyle in a 185-77 victory this afternoon over host University of New England at the Campus Center Pool in Biddeford, Maine. The Sharks improve to 3-5 on the season, while the Nor'Easters fall to 1-3.

Simmons won 12 of 14 events and took the top three places in three races. 

Scholand turned in a time of 18:22.23 in the 1650-yard freestyle to supplant the former pool standard by more than three seconds and lead a one-two-three sweep for the Sharks. She also added a victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 1:04.93 to win by nearly six seconds. First year Meg Driscoll (Haverhill, Mass.) led all swimmers with a meet-high 22 points, including a pair of first-place efforts. The rookie swept the breaststroke events and led a pair of one-two-three showings by Simmons. She won the 50-yard breaststroke with a clip of 35.40 in addition to a triumph in the 100-yard race with a mark of 1:15.77. She also added a second-place finish in the 50-yard butterfly.

Driscoll and Scholand each helped the Sharks to a thrilling victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay with Driscoll leading off, followed by sophomore Lauren Howard (Abington, Mass.), Scholand and first year Katelyn Quinlan (Haverhill, Mass.), who anchored a time of 1:47.13 to win the race by less than a second and close out the meet. 

Senior Laura List (Bedford, Mass.) joined Scholand and Driscoll as the only swimmers in the meet with multiple first-place finishes. List touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:07.67, before turning in a winning mark of 28.38 to claim victory in the 50-yard butterfly. She opened the meet by anchoring Simmons win in the 200-yard medley relay. Sophomore Sarah Singleton (Mission Hills, Calif.) opened the race with an opening backstroke, before Quinlan's breastroke segment and junior Anna Leedham's (Lowell, Mass.) butterfly contribution as part of a time of 1:59.00.

Leedham later won the 500-yard freestyle by just over two tenths of a second with a time of 5:42.22 to edge classmate Oliva Walz (Natick, Mass.), while Singleton dominated the 400-yard individual medley by almost 13 seconds with a time of 4:58.08 for the Sharks.

Howard posted a first-place finish in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 30.93, while first year Kiera Bragdon (Haddam, Conn.) registered her first collegiate win for Simmons with a time of 27.72 in the 50-yard freestyle.

Sophomore Maggie Miller (Northampton, Mass.) and sophomore Haley Griffin (Rome, N.Y.) each won events for University of New England. Miller bested the field in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:07.24, while Griffin won the 100-yard freestyle by more than a second with a mark of 56.82.

The Sharks return to the water on Friday, December 6 for the first day of the three-day Massachusetts Institute of Technology Invitational.
