Simmons University swimmer Áine Scholand Class of 2020

WINTHROP, Mass. – Simmons University women's swimmer Aine Scholand (Albuquerque, N.M.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week for the week of October 28 to November 3, it was announced today by the league.

Scholand earns the award for the second time this season, having been tabbed for the week of October 14-20. The honor marks the sixth time she has received the accolade in her career.

The senior won both distance events for the Sharks, touching the wall first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a mark of 10:56.86 to win the event by more than 20 seconds and later placed first in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:22.32 by over six seconds in a quadruple dual-meet against host Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Brandeis University, Babson College and Smith College on November 1 in Worcester, Mass. The Sandia High School graduate also helped Simmons to a fourth place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, swimming the anchor leg to contribute to a time of 3:52.22.

For the season, the Neuroscience and Behavior major has won all six individual races she has entered with three wins in the 1000-yard freestyle, two in the 500-yard freestyle and a victory in the 100-yard backstroke. Scholand has also been part of a pair of 200-yard freestyle winning relays for the Sharks.

For her career Scholand has been named All-America in each of the last two seasons, earning First Team accolades as a sophomore and Honorable Mention recognition last year. The New Mexico native has also been selected the GNAC Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Year in both years with Simmons and is the only competitor in school history to compete in three different events at the NCAA Championship in one season. She owns three individual school records in the 1650, 1000 and 500-yard freestyle and helped the Sharks establish a school standard in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

Simmons is currently 2-4 on the season and will enter the water again on Saturday, November 9 when it hosts Wellesley College at 1:00 p.m. in the Holmes Sports Center Natatorium.
