WINTHROP, Mass. –Simmons University's Sarah Singleton (Mission Hills, Calif.) was named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Women's Swimming & Diving Rookie of the Week for the week of January 21-27, it was announced today by the league.
Singleton has now received the award a conference-high four times this season after being named last week and for the weeks of October 22-28 and October 29 to November 4.
The first year won both of her individual events and helped the Sharks win a relay race as well to help Simmons to a 197-103 victory over visiting Mount Holyoke College on January 26. The West Coast native turned in a time of 1:02.93 to touch the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly and added a victory in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 1:06.00 to win the event by more than three seconds. Singleton competed in the first event of the dual meet by swimming the butterfly leg of the 400-yard medley relay to help the Sharks post a combined time of 4:13.23 to win the race by nearly eight seconds.
For the season, the Grace Christian Academy graduate has registered 15 top-five finishes, while winning 10 events. A Neuroscience and Behavior major, Singleton shattered the school record for the 400-yard individual medley by more than 12 seconds with a time of 4:40.31 to place fourth at the MIT Winter Invitational in early December. She also helped Simmons set a new standard for the 800-yard freestyle relay in the same meet when she swam the third leg of the race to combine on a school-record time of 7:46.36. The former member of the Rattler Swim Club in San Fernando, CA has won six different events this season for Simmons with wins in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke, the 100 and 200-yard butterfly and the 100 and 400-yard individual medley races and has won three of her last five individual events. The student-athlete has been exemplary in the classroom as well, earning a spot on the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association Fall All-Academic team after posting a perfect 4.0 grade point average following her first semester of college work.
The Sharks are currently 11-2 on the season in dual meet action and have registered double-digit victories in six straight seasons. They return to action on Friday, February 1 when they begin their defense of their crown as the host of the three-day GNAC Women's Swimming & Diving Championship at 6:30 p.m.
