NORTHFIELD, Vt. - Simmons soccer (3-11-2, 2-8-1 GNAC) defeated Norwich University (3-11-1, 1-9-1 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Wednesday night at Sabine Field.

Once the whistle was blown, Simmons went directly up the field to start their offensive series. Within the first minute of play, first year Emma McEwan fired a shot towards goal. This pressure by the Sharks offense set the tone for the rest of the game, which made the Cadets defend heavily early on.

Simmons took 15 shots in the entire game; with senior captains Riley Wasiuk and Izabella Warren combining for half of the team's shots in the first half. There were more than a couple close opportunities for the Sharks, but nothing resulted in a goal. Heading into halftime, Simmons were more than determined to get a goal or two on the board in the second half.

The second half started out with the Cadets offense coming towards the Sharks defense more often than the first half. Nonetheless, junior goalkeeper Marita Nothacker, who registered six saves, and the Simmons defense stopped any of Norwich's advances.

In the 52nd minute, junior Sydney Neumuth scored the first goal of the match on a pass from first year Kayla Noonan, putting Simmons on the board. Then, not long after, in the 64th minute, senior Izabella Warren fired a shot just outside of the defensive circle, right past Cadets' goalkeeper Christine Gyda, to add another goal for the Sharks.

With time ticking down in the second half, both teams continued to push their offense forward to get goals. Both goalkeepers had impressive performances in the last remaining minutes, to keep their respective teams in position to score.

Simmons Highlights:

  • Junior goalkeeper Marita Nothacker notched six saves for the game and registered her fourth shutout of her career.
  • Junior Sydney Neumuth and senior Izabella Warren both scored their second goals of the season in the 52nd minute and in the 64th minute.
