Soccer Falls to Albertus Magnus in a Physical Contest on Saturday Afternoon

BRIGHTON, Mass. - Simmons soccer (2-8-1, 1-5-0 GNAC) fell to Great Northeast Athletic Conference opponent, Albertus Magnus College (5-3-2, 3-2-1 GNAC) in a physical game on Saturday afternoon at Daly Field.

From the start of the game, the Falcons were a constant threat to the Sharks defense. Falcons junior Erina Ismaili scored the game's only goal in the fourth minute of the game.

The pressure continued strongly with Albertus Magnus receiving six corner kicks. However, junior goalkeeper Marita Nothacker played magnificent in net, registering seven saves to keep the team in good position on the defensive side.

Offensively, there were a few close opportunities towards the end of the half for the Sharks.  Senior Riley Wasiuk and junior Sydney Neumuth both had chances to score the equalizer but came up a bit short.

The Sharks emerged from the locker room with renewed determination to scored. Within the first minute of the second half, first-year Emma McEwan fired a shot towards Falcons net, but goalkeeper Amy Stevens came up with the save.

Albertus Magnus still were pressuring the Simmons' backline, but it was the staunch Sharks defense that kept preventing the Falcons from adding to their lead. Time began to tick down in the half, with the intensity rising between both teams trying to score at each other's goals. The Sharks had some opportunities to score but again, came up short in the remaining minutes of the game.

Simmons Highlights:

  • Junior goalkeeper Marita Nothacker had seven saves out of eight shots on goal for the day.
  • Senior defender Riley Wasiuk led the team in shots with two shots on net.

Game Notes:

  • The Falcons outshot the Sharks, 25-5, with just 15 shots in the first half alone.
  • Albertus Magnus won the possession battle, 53%-47%.
