Soccer Battles Maine Presque Isle to a 1-1 Stalemate

BRIGHTON, Mass. – Opening up the season at home, Simmons soccer (0-1-1) battled the University of Maine – Presque Isle (0-0-1) to a 1-1 tie at Daly Field, Saturday afternoon.

The Shark offense came out the gate strong. Sophomore Sydney Neumuth fired a bullet towards the net seven minutes into the game. Late in the first half, Simmons had their best opportunity to score following a UMPI foul. Senior Izabella Warren ripped a shot towards the net, but Owl goalkeeper Savannah Rodriguez came up with the save to send the game into half time tied at zero.

Coming out at the start of the second half, the Owls broke up the stalemate with a goal by Zhoreen Malik to take a 1-0 lead. But the Sharks continue to fight and get shots off. They finally broke through in the with eight minutes remaining on the game-clock.

With a clear field in front of her, Warren sprinted up the middle of the field then dished a pass to first-year Kayla Noonan in front of the net, who buried the equalizer in to the corner of the goal.

Junior goalkeeper Marita Nothacker played outstanding in net, registering five saves.

  • Simmons outshot UMPI, 14-11 and edged out the Owls, 4-3 on corner kicks.

Simmons returns to the pitch on Tuesday, September 6 for a road game against Lesley University at 7 p.m. Game to be played at Minuteman High School.
