Soccer Edged in Double-Overtime at Rhode Island College, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Simmons University women's soccer team was defeated in double-overtime by host Rhode Island College, 2-1, this afternoon on Alumni Field in Providence, R.I. The Sharks fall to 2-11-1 on the season, while the Anchorwomen improve to 4-12-0.

Rhode Island College owned a 29-12 shot advantage and really put pressure on Simmons in the overtime periods with an 8-1 shot margin. 

Senior midfielder Christina Armstrong (Wakefield, R.I.) scored on a set piece for the Anchorwomen with 2:25 remaining in the second overtime for the victory. First year midfielder Alexandra Amore (Saunderstown, R.I.) served a corner kick into the box, where Armstrong had an open shooting lane and put a shot into the top left corner for her second marker of the match and the season.

Senior forward Amber Nobbs (Granville, Mass.) looked to end the match earlier for the visitors after receiving a serve from first year midfielder Izabella Warren (Hillsboro, N.H.) on a corner kick, but her shot was stopped with 81 seconds left in the first overtime.

The Sharks opened an early 1-0 lead in just the seventh minute of play when Warren took advantage of a penalty kick opportunity, ripping a low shot to the keeper's right for her team-leading sixth marker of the year coming at 6:50 of the opening half. 

Neither team was able to score for the remainder of the half, despite the Anchorwomen owning an 11-3 shot count for the stanza. 

Rhode Island College wasted no time in getting the equalizer in the second half when when a loose ball found the foot of Armstrong, following a corner kick by senior midfielder Kat Carrillo (Central Falls, RI), in the 48th minute. Armstrong fired a shot to the bottom left of the goal for her first career marker.

The score remained even for the final 42:55 of play before the home team seized victory in the extra sessions.

Simmons first year keeper Melanie Colman (Holliston, Mass.) recorded 15 saves for her fifth double-digit save effort of the season, while senior goalie Erica Edwards (North Kingstown, R.I.) stopped five of six shots to earn the victory for the Anchorwomen.

The Sharks return to action on Wednesday, October 23 when they travel to Nashua, N.H. to take on Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Rivier University at 7:00 p.m., while Rhode Island College heads to Gorham, Maine on October 26 to play Little East Conference foe University of Southern Maine at 12:00 p.m. in its season finale.
